Method & caveats. NAEP Science, grade 8, average scale score on the 2009 framework (earlier science assessments used a different framework and are not comparable). Scores rose through 2015, held in 2019, and fell back to the 2009 baseline by 2024. The 0–500-scale NAEP Long-Term Trend and 0–300-scale main assessments are NCES's national probability samples; values are national public+private averages for all students.
