Method & caveats. NAEP Long-Term Trend reading, age 13, from the same 1971-anchored instrument as the age-9 series (same R1→R3 format seam at 2004). The 2023 score (255.7) is back at the 1971 level after a 2012 peak. Age 17 was last assessed in 2012 and is not carried here. The 0–500-scale NAEP Long-Term Trend and 0–300-scale main assessments are NCES's national probability samples; values are national public+private averages for all students.
